Hello, my fellow wanderer! I'm Turunç. Yes, I'm that very Turunç, the beautiful, tranquil, lush green bay of Marmaris. I'm here to tell you about myself and all the beauty I hold in my embrace. And I'll tell it in such a way that your soul will be cooled by the Aegean breeze and your eyes will lose themselves in my deep blue waters. If you're ready, come, let's discover this hidden paradise together.
A Little About Me, a Little About the Sea: What Turunç Is and What It Isn't
About 20 kilometres southwest of Marmaris, tucked away among majestic mountains, I'm like a deep-blue embrace. They say I took my name from the citrus trees, those sweet-scented trees that once grew here in abundance. I used to be a small fishing village, living quietly and minding my own business. In time my beauty was discovered, but don't worry: I never became one of those crowded, noisy holiday resorts. I managed to hold on to my soul and my calm. And that is my greatest source of well-being (peace and health): offering a calm, serene atmosphere at one with nature.
My bay is like a natural harbour. My sea is usually calm, without waves. That's why I'm tailor-made for families with children and for those just learning to swim. My beach is a mix of fine sand and pebbles and, most importantly, it has been awarded the Blue Flag for years. This is international recognition of how clean my waters are and of the quality of my beach. Slipping into the sea early in the morning, while the sun is only just rising from behind the mountains, and feeling the stillness of first light, that dawn hour at the very start of the day, is a priceless experience.
Traces of the Past: Whispers of History
You may not find huge ancient cities on my own land, but right next to me, up in the hills, you can hear the whispers of history. The Ancient City of Amos sits on a hill that gazes down on me with a bird's-eye view. In its day it was a small city belonging to the Rhodian League. With its theatre, city walls and temple ruins, it opens a window onto the past. The view from the theatre is especially breathtaking: it lays the whole of Turunç Bay, the islands across the water and the open sea at your feet. A short climb up here brings you face to face with history and rewards you with an unforgettable photo.
A Day in Turunç: What to Do, What to See?
If you've decided to spend a day with me, you won't have time to get bored:
- Sea and Sun: Of course, top of the list are my crystal-blue waters and my golden sunshine. Stretch out on your sun lounger with your book, then swim a few strokes in the cool waters of the Aegean.
- Seafront Promenade Walk: Along my promenade that runs the length of the shore, you can enjoy a lovely stroll in the morning or early evening. Palm trees and bougainvillea keep you company.
- Boat Trips: Exploring the surrounding bays on a day boat trip from Turunç is a wonderful option. You can stop at spots such as Amos Bay, Kumlubük and Gebekse.
- Water Sports: If you fancy a bit of adrenaline, you can try activities such as jet skiing and parasailing at the water sports centres on the beach.
- Monday Market: If your visit falls on a Monday, don't miss the local market set up in the village square! Fresh fruit and vegetables and local herbs are all here.
- Nature Walks: The pine forests and mountains that surround me offer wonderful routes for anyone who loves hiking.
A Thousand Shades of Green: My Flora and Natural Beauty
I'm not just about the sea. The mountains I lean my back against are covered with the vegetation typical of the Mediterranean climate. Turkish red pine forests are my most distinctive feature. The scent of resin they release into the air grows even sharper, especially in the mornings and after rain. Among the pines grow olive trees, carob, bay laurel and myrtle. This green mantle delights both your eyes and your soul.
My Neighbours: The Beauty Around Me
- Kumlubük: My neighbour right next door. It's known for its tranquillity and quality restaurants.
- İçmeler: A larger and livelier resort than me. It lies between Marmaris and me.
- Marmaris: The centre of the region, with a more cosmopolitan atmosphere thanks to its bustling harbour and castle.
- Datça Peninsula: If you have a car, you can set off on a voyage of discovery towards Datça. You can see villages such as Selimiye and Bozburun.
Mouth-Watering Flavours: Turunç Cuisine
At my table you'll find the freshest examples of Aegean and Mediterranean cuisine. Fish caught that very day, vegetables cooked in olive oil, all kinds of meze and local wild greens (wild radish greens, mallow) are the must-haves of every table. Our region is also famous for its pine honey.
How Do You Get to Me? Routes and Options
There are several different ways to come and enjoy my beauty:
By Air
The nearest airport to me is Dalaman Airport (DLM), about 110–120 km away. You can take a Havaş or MUTTAŞ shuttle to Marmaris and, from there, a dolmuş (shared minibus) to me.
By Road (Private Car)
Getting to Marmaris from many cities in Turkey is easy. Once you reach Marmaris, just follow the signs for Turunç. The road from Marmaris to me is about 20 km long: quite winding, but every bit as scenic.
By Sea (Water Taxi)
Especially in the summer months, you can reach me by sea on the water taxis that leave from Marmaris or İçmeler. The journey takes about 45–60 minutes.
One Last Word
So this is me, dear traveller. A haven where calm, nature, blue and green embrace one another. If you want to get away from the noise, rest your soul and breathe in the warm, friendly atmosphere of the Aegean, my arms are always open to you. Come, fall asleep to the lullaby of my waves, breathe in my pine-scented air and see for yourself how peacefully time flows here.
